#SAHIAA16

The scavenger hunt at the Summer Academic Honors Institute at Ohio Northern University sent students on a wild chase to find buildings, objects, and hopefully not get lost, using #SAHIAA16. The students of the Social Media camp compiled their findings onto Storify and are now presenting their quest to the public!

Writing and Social Media

Writing is a concept often overlooked in high school English classes. While grammar and theme and vocabulary are covered, style and deeper understanding are simply brushed over.

Every student is unique. No two people could create the same imagery or the same dialogue. Everyone has a story inside them that they are waiting to tell, so why aren't they? Because they don't know how.

Storyboarding and developing a plot are pushed to the side to make way for essays about classics that somebody else wrote. While there is always something to learn from the past, it is preventing us from moving into the future.

Students are reading books with tired styles and dead slang. We have ingrained it into their head so much that it's all they know. They will not give new books a chance, they will not try to write as themselves, because that is not what they are taught. They are taught to stick to the books everyone knows, to imitate people they could never be, and it is killing their creativity.

They are not completely silenced though. Although their stories and poems and journals have been locked in their brains, they have found a new way to pour their feelings out and weave a web as intricate or simple as they please. And they do it through a keyboard.

There is no worry about if it is good or if it is worthy; and that is what is so important. They are becoming raw online, on blogging websites and twitter, some private and some not. There will be no grade on their interpretation, because it is their own, and they will not apologize for it.

Social Media may be criticized for the so called 'taking over' of young people's minds, but really it is a spot for them to express in a new form of literature. They are telling their stories online. One they understand, and one where the writing is unique to them.

Top Ten Ohio Day Trips (Podcast)

While Ohio is known for being the Buckeye State, there's a lot more
to it than football. Ohio is home to some of the country's
greatest attractions, and has its own hidden gems as well. In this podcast,
Sydney Zolman and myself go over the Top Ten Day Trips to Take in Ohio.
We cover all areas of Ohio, ranging from areas as rural as Amish
Country, to the fast paced streets of Cleveland; areas as fun as Cedar Point, to
as scary as the Screamatorium.
I hope you'll join us in this short summary of how Ohio could
entertain you for days on end.
